The Quinnipiac University School of Business recently honored four teams of students for winning an online business simulation game for the course SB 101: The Business Environment.
Four faculty members each taught three sections of the course, which is required for freshmen business students. Each faculty member taught 21 teams. The school selected the top team taught by each faculty member. The students’ names were placed on a plaque on display outside the dean’s office.
Students compete by managing a fictitious public company in the simulation MikesBikes. “Thirty-thousand students play this simulation worldwide,” said marketing and advertising professor Brian Jones.
Students analyze information, such as financial and accounting statements and competitor performance to make decisions in four disciplines: management, marketing, accounting and finance. Types of decisions include how much inventory to keep, factory size, paying dividends and how much to spend on marketing. Based on their decisions, the game determines a shareholder value or stock price for each company. Teams with the highest shareholder value win.
“We want students to see how these four disciplines are related,” said Kathleen Simione, assistant professor of accounting.
Life Center Academy graduate, Crystal Cook, Class of 2007 was a member of team 4.
