Sophomore Sam Weer (Willingboro, NJ/Life Center Academy) has been selected as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after she helped the Scarlet Raiders to a 3-0-0 week in non-conference play.
Seeing her first action ever in goal as a fill-in for injured fourth-year starter Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights), Weer did not allow a goal in 214 minutes while making 10 saves. The forward-turned-keeper not only stopped the only shot she faced in the opening half of a 9-0 win over CCNY, but she netted a goal and added an assist in the second half after turning over the net to freshman Samantha Silva (Union City, NJ/Union Hill).
In the opening round of the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic, Weer stifled Staten Island with five saves to post a complete-match shutout in a 7-0 victory. In Saturday’s championship match against Medgar Evers, Weer handcuffed the Cougars for 79 minutes with four saves before completing the final 10 minutes of the match on the field in a 9-0 win.
The two Sams – Weer and Silva – combined to register three shutouts.
